Norway defeated Brazil 2-1 on Sunday to reach the World Cup quarter-finals, thanks to a brilliant second-half display led by Erling Haaland. The Manchester City striker scored twice after Andreas Schjelderup created both goals, while goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland saved an early penalty to inspire Norway’s memorable victory.
Brazil Miss Early Chance Despite Dominating Possession
Brazil started brightly and controlled possession during the opening stages. Vinícius Júnior, Gabriel Martinelli and Rayan repeatedly tested the Norwegian defence.
However, Norway remained composed and looked dangerous on the counterattack. Martin Ødegaard orchestrated attacks from midfield, while Haaland forced Alisson into an important save.
Brazil received a penalty in the 14th minute after a VAR review ruled that Norway had committed a foul inside the box.
Bruno Guimarães stepped forward, but Nyland produced an outstanding save to deny the midfielder. The missed opportunity proved costly for Brazil.
Both teams continued creating chances before the interval. Nevertheless, neither side found the breakthrough, leaving the score level at half-time.
Schjelderup Changes The Game
Norway looked sharper after the restart. Substitute Andreas Schjelderup immediately added pace, creativity and energy to the attack.
Meanwhile, Brazil introduced Neymar and Endrick in search of a breakthrough. Despite those changes, Norway struck first.
In the 79th minute, Schjelderup delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area. Haaland rose above Brazil’s defenders and powered a header beyond Alisson to give Norway a deserved lead.
Haaland Completes Brilliant Brace
Brazil pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Casemiro narrowly missed the target, while Neymar repeatedly threatened from set pieces.
However, Norway defended with discipline and continued to exploit spaces behind Brazil’s defence.
In the 90th minute, Schjelderup provided another decisive assist. His perfectly weighted pass found Haaland, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner for his second goal and Norway’s second of the match.
Neymar Scores Late But Brazil Fall Short
The match produced one final twist deep into stoppage time.
After 12 minutes of added time, referee Ismail Elfath awarded Brazil another penalty following a foul by Leo Østigård on Neymar.
Neymar, who had earlier received a yellow card for a late challenge, converted confidently from the spot in the 100th minute to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
However, Norway successfully managed the remaining moments before the referee blew the final whistle.
Norway Celebrate Historic Victory
Haaland’s clinical finishing, Schjelderup’s two assists and Nyland’s crucial first-half penalty save proved decisive in Norway’s famous victory.
For Brazil, the defeat highlighted missed opportunities. Guimarães’ missed penalty and several wasted chances overshadowed Neymar’s late goal as Norway advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals.
