Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rotimi Amaechi, and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen will compete today in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary as the opposition party selects its candidate for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election. The contest follows the completion of the party’s screening process, takes place under the leadership of interim National Chairman David Mark, and will be conducted through an open primary after consensus talks failed.
ADC Moves to Open Contest After Consensus Talks Collapse
The party leadership initially explored a consensus arrangement among the leading aspirants. However, discussions did not produce an agreement.
As a result, the ADC approved an open contest to determine its presidential flag bearer for the 2027 general election.
Party officials described the process as competitive and closely watched within Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
Screening Committee Clears Aspirants
The three aspirants secured approval to participate after a screening exercise led by Liyel Imoke.
The screening committee completed eligibility checks ahead of the primary election and confirmed the candidates for the final stage of the process.
Election Committee Oversees Primary Process
To supervise the exercise, the ADC constituted a Presidential Election Committee chaired by Abdulfatah Ahmed.
The committee secretary is Prof. Yisa Gana.
Other committee members include:

- Dr. Auwalu Anwar
- Chief Emenike Ikechi
- Dr. Macaulay Iyare
- Tajudeen Bakare
- Elder Ubolo Itodo Okpanachi
- Zainab Buba Galadima
- Uzoamaka Onyeama
- Maj.-Gen. Muhammad Inuwa Idris
The committee will coordinate voting procedures and monitor compliance nationwide.
Appeals Committee Established to Handle Disputes
The party also created a Presidential Appeals Committee to address complaints arising from the primary.
The committee is chaired by Dr. Suleiman Usman (SAN), while Barr. Ken Imasuagbon serves as secretary. Barr. Dare Okerade is a member.
The structure aims to strengthen confidence in the credibility of the process.
Electoral Officers Deployed Nationwide
According to ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, electoral officers have already been deployed across the country.
He expressed confidence that the election would remain transparent, free, and fair.
Additionally, all three aspirants reportedly agreed to accept the outcome of the primary irrespective of the final result.
