Abuja, Nigeria – The House of Representatives on Thursday appointed Frederick Agbedi, lawmaker representing Sagbama-Ekeremor Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State, as the new Minority Leader. The House also named Mansur Manu Soro as Minority Whip and Abdussamad Dasuki as Deputy Minority Leader. The appointments followed a consensus decision by minority parties to fill vacant leadership positions in the opposition caucus and strengthen coordination ahead of future legislative activities.
House Completes Minority Leadership Structure
The appointments followed weeks of consultations and political negotiations among opposition lawmakers.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced the nominations during plenary after reading a letter submitted by minority parties.
The decision completed the body of principal officers within the opposition caucus of the 10th House of Representatives.
The development also followed recent political realignments and amendments to House rules guiding the emergence of principal officers.

Speaking after his emergence, Agbedi pledged to focus on legislative responsibilities and issues affecting Nigerians.
He stressed that the opposition caucus would remain committed to constructive engagement and effective representation.
According to him, lawmakers in the minority bloc will continue to promote accountability and contribute to national development through legislation.
New Leadership Expected to Strengthen Opposition Coordination
The new leadership team is expected to improve coordination among opposition lawmakers.
It will also help shape the caucus’ approach to key legislative matters when the House resumes from recess.
Meanwhile, the House has commenced a two-week legislative break.
The completion of the minority leadership structure remains one of the major highlights of recent proceedings in the chamber.
Significance of the Appointments
Political observers believe the appointments could strengthen the opposition’s voice in the National Assembly.
The leadership team will play a key role in coordinating legislative strategies and engaging the majority caucus on national issues.
As lawmakers prepare to return from recess, attention will focus on how the new leaders drive the opposition agenda within the House.
