Apply Decisive Force Against Criminals, COAS Charges Graduating Army Recruits

By Elizabeth Ugbo

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Thursday charged graduating recruits of the 90 Regular Recruit Intake to apply decisive force against bandits, kidnappers and other criminal elements. He gave the directive during the graduation ceremony of the Restore Hope programme at the Depot Nigerian Army Shooting Range in Zaria, Kaduna State. The Army Chief urged the recruits to remain professional, disciplined and committed to restoring peace across Nigeria as they prepare for induction into military service in two days.

Nigeria Faces Complex Security Challenges

Lieutenant General Shaibu said Nigeria is passing through a critical period marked by terrorism, banditry and other asymmetric threats. He noted that criminal groups continue to inflict hardship on citizens through kidnappings and the destruction of lives and property.

According to him, today’s security environment requires more than courage. He stressed that intelligence, discipline and strategic thinking now play a vital role in military operations.

“The security challenges confronting Nigeria today are complex, uncertain and ambiguous. Terrorism, banditry and other asymmetric threats demand not only courage but also intelligence, discipline and strategic thinking. The era of relying solely on conventional responses to unconventional threats is behind us,” he said.

COAS Demands Professionalism and Discipline

The Army Chief urged the recruits to remain resolute while carrying out their duties. He instructed them to confront criminal elements decisively and always operate within the Rules of Engagement and the highest standards of military ethics.

Furthermore, he reminded the recruits that professionalism and respect for human rights remain essential in every military operation.

Nigerian Army Expands Modern Combat Capabilities

Lieutenant General Shaibu congratulated the recruits for successfully completing their rigorous military training. He also assured them that the Nigerian Army has acquired modern combat enablers to improve operational effectiveness.

In addition, he disclosed that the Army is pursuing the procurement of more advanced capabilities. These efforts aim to make military operations more efficient and safer for personnel.

Restore Hope Initiative Strengthens Military Readiness

The Restore Hope initiative is a specialised programme that prepares recruits for Nigeria’s evolving security challenges. The programme promotes professionalism, discipline, resilience and unwavering loyalty to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The initiative also equips soldiers with the skills needed to respond effectively to modern security threats while supporting national peace and stability.
