Brigadier General Braimah, a senior Nigerian Army officer, died on April 9, 2026, during a terrorist attack in Benisheikh, Borno State. He served as the Brigade Commander of the 29 Task Force. Terrorists attacked the base at midnight, leading to heavy casualties. He died alongside several soldiers while defending the facility. The Nigerian Army confirmed the incident after communication broke down during the assault.
Distinguished Military Career and Education
Brigadier General Braimah built a strong reputation through discipline and leadership. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from the Nigerian Defence Academy.
Moreover, he obtained a Master’s in Defence Studies from King’s College London. He also earned a Master’s in International Relations and Strategic Studies from Benue State University. In addition, he secured a Master’s in National Security Management and War Studies from the National Defence University, Islamabad.
Throughout his career, he handled command, training, and administrative roles. Between September 2024 and March 2025, he served as Chief of Staff at 6 Division Headquarters, Port Harcourt. There, he coordinated operations and ensured combat readiness.
Earlier, he worked as Chief Instructor at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji. He mentored officers and shaped future military leaders. He also commanded the Infantry Presidential Guards Battalion in Abuja, overseeing security and ceremonial duties.
Beyond Nigeria, he served as a United Nations Observer. He supported peacekeeping missions through ceasefire monitoring and intelligence gathering.
Final Moments Before the Attack
Reports revealed that the General spoke with his twin brother before the attack. His brother, who lives in the United Kingdom, described their last conversation.
They spoke after midnight, as usual. However, the General suddenly paused during the call. Shortly after, the line went dead.
His brother tried calling back several times but got no response. He stayed awake until about 4 a.m., still attempting to reconnect.
By 6:30 a.m., a senior Army officer called with devastating news. The officer confirmed that terrorists attacked the base and killed several soldiers, including the General.
Edo State Government Grants Scholarships
Governor Monday Okpebholo approved full educational scholarships for the General’s three children. The initiative covers their education from current levels through university.
The beneficiaries include:
- Farida Hussain-Braimah, 18, a 100-level Software Engineering student at Nile University, Abuja
- Amir Hussain-Braimah, 16, an SS3 student at Olumawu Senior School, Abuja
- Yasmeen Hussain-Braimah, 12, a JSS2 pupil at Olumawu Junior Secondary School, Abuja
The governor described the gesture as a moral responsibility. He stressed the need to support families of fallen heroes.
Government Calls for Wider Support
Governor Okpebholo urged other states and private organizations to follow this example. He emphasized structured support for families of fallen military personnel.
According to him, the initiative aligns with the SHINE Agenda. This policy focuses on education, social welfare, and inclusive governance.
He stated that no child of a national hero should lack educational opportunities. He also described the General as a symbol of courage, discipline, and patriotism.
A Legacy of Service and Sacrifice
Brigadier General Braimah died while protecting Nigeria. His service reflects commitment to national security and global peacekeeping.
His death highlights the risks faced by military personnel in counter-terrorism operations. However, his legacy continues through his service record and the support extended to his family.
