Kaduna, Nigeria – June 7, 2026 – The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), commissioned the Kaduna Christian Academy in Ungwan Sunday, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Sunday. The school, built by the Department of State Services (DSS), aims to expand access to quality education and help counter terrorism, extremism, and radicalisation through learning and community development.
Education Remains a Strong Tool Against Extremism
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, General Musa described Nigeria’s security challenge as an asymmetric war. According to him, terrorist groups often exploit ignorance, hopelessness, and misinformation to recruit followers.
He stressed that education remains one of the most effective tools for combating violent extremism.
“As Minister of Defence, I view this school as a critical military asset without a single rifle,” he said.
He added that lasting security depends on defeating ignorance and creating opportunities for young people.
“This school is a weapon of mass instruction in the right hands,” Musa stated.
DSS School Project Promotes Community Development
The Defence Minister praised the DSS for investing in education and community development. He noted that the project demonstrates a broader approach to national security.
According to him, security agencies must build trust while protecting citizens.
“We see the DSS in a different light as builders of the future,” he said.
Musa explained that the agency’s role extends beyond intelligence gathering and law enforcement. He said education strengthens communities and reduces vulnerability to extremist ideologies.
The Kaduna Christian Academy was constructed through a partnership involving the DSS, Nest Global Resources, Dan Oil Exploration Limited, and Tantina Security Services.
School Supports Religious Inclusion and Social Harmony
The Minister highlighted the academy as a symbol of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
He recalled that the DSS previously built a school for the Muslim community in Danbushiya, also located in Chikun Local Government Area.
According to him, both projects reflect the government’s commitment to inclusive development regardless of religious affiliation.
Message to Students, Parents and Residents
Addressing students, Musa described the school as a place of hope and learning.
He encouraged them to embrace education, critical thinking, and responsible citizenship.
He also reassured parents that the government remains committed to their future and the welfare of their children.
Furthermore, he said the academy complements Kaduna State Government’s efforts to provide quality education across the state.
The Minister urged teachers and school administrators to maintain high standards of discipline and professionalism.
In addition, he called on local youths and residents to safeguard the facility.
“See this school not as a target, but as your inheritance,” he said.
Kaduna Government Commends Initiative
The event attracted government officials, religious leaders, traditional rulers, and community stakeholders.
Representing Governor Uba Sani, Kaduna State Commissioner for Justice, Barrister James Kanyip, welcomed the initiative.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to working with security agencies and private sector partners to promote education and development across Kaduna State.
Education and Security Must Work Together
General Musa concluded that education and security are closely linked. He noted that enlightened communities are more resilient against terrorism and violent extremism.
He therefore urged continued collaboration among government institutions, security agencies, private organisations, and local communities to build a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.
