IKENNE, OGUN STATE – Nigeria’s Super Falcons defeated Senegal 2-1 on Friday at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne, Ogun State, as they continued preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Toni Payne and Asisat Oshoala scored for Nigeria, while Sokhna Pene netted a late goal for Senegal. The friendly match helped the defending African champions assess their readiness ahead of the tournament scheduled for July and August.

Super Falcons Take Control in First Half

The Super Falcons started brightly and dominated possession from the opening whistle.

Everton midfielder Toni Payne opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. She finished confidently after receiving a well-delivered pass from right-back Shukurat Oladipo.

Nigeria continued to press forward and create chances. Their attacking approach paid off again when veteran striker Asisat Oshoala converted a penalty to double the lead.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade nearly added a third goal before halftime. However, Senegal goalkeeper Khadi Faye produced a fine save to deny her effort.

Nigeria Maintain Dominance After the Break

The 10-time WAFCON champions controlled the game throughout the second half.

Nigeria enjoyed most of the possession and created several opportunities. Despite their dominance, they failed to extend the scoreline.

Coach Justin Madugu’s side remained organised and limited Senegal’s attacking threats for much of the contest.

Senegal Pull One Back Late On

Senegal increased the pressure in the closing stages.

Their persistence paid off in the 87th minute when Sokhna Pene struck a long-range effort into the net. The goal reduced the deficit and set up a tense finish.

Nevertheless, the Super Falcons stayed composed and protected their lead until the final whistle.

Teams Set for Another Friendly Clash

Both sides will meet again on Monday at the same venue.

The second friendly will provide another opportunity for Nigeria and Senegal to fine-tune their squads ahead of the 2026 WAFCON.

The Super Falcons will enter the tournament as defending champions and will aim to secure a record-extending 11th continental title.
