Hadi Sirika Declares 2027 Senate Bid Amid EFCC Trial

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika has announced his intention to contest the Katsina North Senatorial seat in the 2027 elections. He made this declaration on Friday at the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat in Katsina. Sirika said he decided to run after repeated calls from his supporters. Despite facing an ongoing trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), he remains focused on returning to active politics. His goal is to improve living conditions across the senatorial district.

Political Background and Legislative Experience

Sirika is not new to legislative duties. He served in the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2007. Later, he won election to the Senate in 2011.

Over the years, he has built a strong political presence in Katsina State. Therefore, his latest move signals a calculated return to national politics.

Nigeria Air Controversy

During his tenure under former President Muhammadu Buhari, Sirika led the aviation ministry. Notably, the ministry unveiled Nigeria Air in 2023, just days before Buhari left office.

However, the project sparked widespread criticism. Many stakeholders questioned its ownership structure. Under the arrangement, Ethiopian Airlines held a 49 percent stake. Meanwhile, the Federal Government owned only 5 percent. A group of Nigerian investors controlled the remaining 46 percent.

As a result, debates over transparency and national interest dominated public discourse.

EFCC Trial and Allegations

Currently, Sirika faces prosecution by the EFCC. The agency accuses him of abuse of office. It also alleges he awarded contracts worth billions of naira to his relatives.

Although the trial continues, Sirika has not withdrawn from political ambitions. Instead, he appears determined to clear his name while pursuing office.

2027 Ambition and Campaign Focus

Looking ahead, Sirika says his campaign will prioritize better living standards. He aims to address economic and social challenges in Katsina North.

Moreover, his supporters believe his experience could benefit the district. However, critics argue that the ongoing trial may affect his chances.

Conclusion

Sirika’s declaration introduces a new dynamic into the 2027 elections. While his experience strengthens his candidacy, legal challenges remain a major factor. Consequently, the coming months will shape both his political future and public perception.
