Israeli Airstrikes Kill 12 in Southern Lebanon Despite Ceasefire

By Elizabeth Ugbo

At least 12 people died in southern Lebanon on Friday, May 2, 2026, after Israeli airstrikes hit residential areas in Habboush and nearby towns, despite an ongoing US-brokered ceasefire, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health.

Rising Death Toll in Lebanon Conflict

Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health reported 2,618 deaths and 8,094 injuries since hostilities resumed on March 2. The figures continue to rise despite a ceasefire announced on April 17 and extended to May 17.

Meanwhile, at least 28 people died on Thursday alone. On Friday, fresh strikes added more casualties, including women and children.

Airstrikes Hit Residential Areas

Israeli forces carried out intense air raids in southern Lebanon. In Habboush, at least eight people died and eight others suffered injuries. Victims included a woman and a child.

In addition, strikes near Tyre and Nabatieh killed four more people. Rescue teams searched through rubble after entire buildings collapsed.

Reports from the ground showed widespread destruction. Residential neighborhoods, a convent, and a school were demolished during the attacks.

Evacuation Orders and Civilian Impact

Before the strikes, Israel issued an evacuation order to Habboush residents. People were told to move at least 1,000 metres away. However, attacks still followed shortly after the warning.

A day earlier, the military struck the same town without any notice. Consequently, civilians faced heightened risks and uncertainty.

Although Israel stated it targets Hezbollah, many casualties have been civilians. This has raised concerns about the humanitarian impact of the strikes.

Ongoing Clashes Between Israel and Hezbollah

Fighting between Israel and Hezbollah intensified after the Gaza war began in October 2023. Israel escalated attacks in September 2024, killing Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Although a ceasefire was reached in November 2024, violations reportedly exceeded 10,000 incidents.

Hezbollah resumed attacks on March 2. The group targeted Israeli forces, including a Merkava tank and military vehicles in southern لبنان.

Continued Military Presence in Southern Lebanon

Israel still occupies parts of southern Lebanon, which it describes as a buffer zone. Meanwhile, Hezbollah continues operations against Israeli troops in the region.

As violence persists, the humanitarian situation worsens. Civil defence teams continue rescue operations in heavily damaged areas.

Humanitarian Concerns Grow

Rescue workers reported scenes of severe destruction. Entire neighborhoods have been flattened, leaving many trapped under debris.

Observers warn that continued strikes during a ceasefire undermine efforts to stabilize the region.
