Michael Kayode has confirmed he wants to represent Italy national football team at senior level despite being eligible to play for Nigeria national football team. The 21-year-old Brentford F.C. defender made the statement during an interview with Tuttosport, where he declared that his international future remains with Italy. His comments came amid growing speculation linking him with a possible switch to Nigeria after his impressive performances in England.
The young defender continues to attract attention in the Premier League. Recently, organisers nominated him for the Young Player of the Season award. As a result, discussions about his international allegiance intensified among Nigerian football supporters.
Kayode Declares Loyalty To Italy
Kayode explained that he has always identified strongly with Italy’s national setup. According to him, his football development started with Italy’s youth teams, and he wants to continue that journey.
“I will always give priority to Italy. Even at youth level, I grew up wearing the Azzurri shirt,” Kayode said.
He added that he hopes to receive a senior call-up soon.
“I hope to achieve this dream as soon as possible, but I have no doubt about which path to choose,” he stated.
Talks With Gennaro Gattuso
The defender also revealed that he spoke with former Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso before the World Cup play-off in March. However, the coaching crew eventually left him out of the squad.
“Yes, we also had dinner with other Italian Premier League players,” Kayode admitted.
Although he missed selection, the defender said he still felt connected to the national team project.
“I was doing well, and I felt involved even without being called up for the play-offs,” he added.
Nigeria Fans React To Kayode’s Decision
Kayode’s latest comments appear to end speculation surrounding a possible international switch to Nigeria. Many Nigerian football fans had hoped the defender would eventually represent the Super Eagles because of his Nigerian roots.
However, the Brentford star has now made his intentions clear. He remains committed to earning a place in Italy’s senior national team.
