The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified aerial surveillance operations to support the rescue of teachers and pupils abducted by bandits from Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. Governor Seyi Makinde disclosed this during a courtesy visit by representatives of the Chief of the Air Staff on June 5, 2026, in Ibadan. The surveillance missions aim to generate intelligence that will help security agencies locate and safely recover the victims.
Makinde Highlights Role of Air Surveillance
According to a statement issued by NAF spokesman, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Governor Makinde revealed that the Air Force deployed an aerial surveillance platform immediately after the abduction.
He explained that the surveillance flights have continued to provide valuable intelligence. As a result, security agencies have improved coordination in ongoing search-and-rescue efforts.
Makinde appealed to residents to remain patient and supportive. He assured the public that authorities are deploying all available resources to secure the victims’ release.
Oyo Acquires Security Assets
The governor also praised the Air Force for its swift intervention and sustained support.
He disclosed that Oyo State recently acquired aerial security platforms to strengthen surveillance operations. However, the assets are still undergoing assembly at the NAF Base in Lagos.
Makinde noted that the state purchased the platforms after consulting with the NAF. The collaboration ensures access to maintenance services, engineering expertise, and pilot training.
He expressed confidence that the aircraft would significantly boost security operations across Oyo State and neighboring states once fully operational.
NAF Reaffirms Commitment to Rescue Mission
Speaking on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh reaffirmed NAF’s commitment to supporting rescue efforts.
He assured the Oyo State Government of the Air Force’s solidarity and continued assistance until the victims regain freedom.
Suleh also commended the state government’s support for NAF projects and infrastructure development.
“The NAF remains committed to working closely with other security agencies and stakeholders to safeguard lives and property,” he said.
Abduction Triggers Nationwide Concern
Bandits kidnapped pupils and teachers from Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School in Esiele, and L.A. Primary School during a deadly attack on May 15, 2026.
The incident sparked protests by teachers across Nigeria and civil society organizations in Ibadan. Protesters demanded urgent action to secure the victims’ release.
One teacher reportedly died while in captivity, further increasing public outrage.
Last week, the House of Representatives urged the Federal Government and security agencies to rescue the abducted teachers and pupils.
In response, President Bola Tinubu approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards and deployed a special rescue team to support recovery efforts.
Security agencies continue to combine intelligence gathering, surveillance operations, and coordinated rescue missions to secure the safe return of the victims.
