The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results and scheduled a re-sit examination for July 22 and 23, 2026. The announcement came on Thursday through the council’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani. The re-sit will take place across Nigeria for candidates who failed Mathematics, English Studies, or both. The initiative aims to help affected students secure admission into Senior Secondary School (SSS1) without repeating an academic year.
Over 126,000 Candidates Participated
According to NECO, 126,291 candidates registered for the 2026 BECE.
The examination covered 12 subjects and ran from April 20 to April 30, 2026.
The council released the results after concluding the 2026 BECE Award Committee Meeting at its headquarters in Minna, Niger State.
Re-sit Examination Scheduled for July
The Award Committee approved July 22 and 23, 2026, for the re-sit examination.
Candidates with deficiencies in Mathematics, English Studies, or both will participate in the exercise.
NECO explained that the re-sit examination offers affected students another opportunity to meet the requirements for placement into Senior Secondary School.
Re-sit to Support Transition to Senior Secondary School
Azeez Sani said the examination would help candidates address deficiencies in key subjects.
He noted that successful candidates would obtain the certification required for admission into SSS1.
“The Re-sit examination is to enable affected candidates remedy deficiencies in Mathematics and English Studies, which allows them gain the necessary certification for admission and placement into Senior Secondary School (SSS1) without repeating a full academic year,” he said.

The Chairperson of the Award Committee and Director of Basic Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folake David, represented the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, at the meeting.
She expressed satisfaction with the processes that led to the successful release of the results.
David also reaffirmed the committee’s confidence in the conduct and outcome of the examination.
