The Nigeria Police Force has strengthened security at examination centres nationwide ahead of the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The exercise, organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), will run from April 16 to April 25, 2026. Police authorities announced the move on Tuesday through Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid. The action follows rumours about threats in a North Central state, which the police described as false. The force aims to ensure the safety of candidates, staff, and facilities throughout the exams.
Police Dismiss Security Rumours
The police firmly rejected reports claiming insecurity at some UTME centres. According to Anthony Placid, the rumours lack any factual basis.
He stated that the force does not act on speculation. However, it takes public concerns seriously, especially those involving students’ safety and education.
Enhanced Security Measures in Place
To ensure smooth conduct of the exams, the police have deployed additional personnel across the country. These measures include:
- Routine patrols around examination centres
- Perimeter surveillance and security checks
- Rapid response teams positioned strategically
Both visible and undercover officers will operate at the centres. This approach aims to deter any form of disruption.
Collaboration With Other Security Agencies
The police are also working closely with other security agencies. This collaboration strengthens intelligence gathering and quick response to threats.
Placid stressed that authorities will identify and prosecute anyone attempting to disrupt the examination process.
Advice to Candidates and Parents
The police urged candidates to follow all examination guidelines. They also advised students to:
- Arrive early at their centres
- Remain calm and focused
- Report suspicious activities immediately
Parents and guardians should encourage compliance with official instructions.
Warning Against Fake Information
The police warned the public against spreading unverified information, especially on social media. False reports can create panic and disrupt national activities.
Authorities advised citizens to rely only on official updates from the police and JAMB.
Commitment to Safe Examinations
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and public confidence. Officials assured Nigerians that security remains a top priority during the UTME period.
