South-West Governors Intensify Security Collaboration, Says Aiyedatiwa

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State said on Tuesday during an appearance on Politics Today that South-West governors are strengthening security cooperation. He explained this while addressing rising insecurity, recent kidnappings, and the Owo church attack judgment in Ondo State, Nigeria. He added that regional efforts aim to protect lives and property through joint strategies and intelligence sharing.

Ondo State’s Strategic Security Position

Aiyedatiwa described Ondo State as a gateway to the South-West.
He noted that the state shares boundaries with several regions. These include Kogi, Ekiti, Osun, and Ogun states.

He stressed that this location increases security pressure. Therefore, coordinated action remains essential across neighboring states.

Ongoing Forest Security Operations

The governor revealed that security agencies conduct operations inside forest reserves.
He said many of these efforts remain out of public view.

According to him, authorities continue silent but active engagements.
He added that government often faces criticism when incidents occur. However, he insisted that proactive work continues daily.

Reaction to Owo Church Attack Judgment

Aiyedatiwa reacted to the judgment on the St. Francis Catholic Church attack in Owo.
The attack in June 2022 killed over 40 worshippers and injured several others.

The Federal High Court sentenced four suspects to death by hanging.
Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the ruling after a terrorism trial filed by the Department of State Services.

The governor described the verdict as justice for victims. He said it also strengthens public confidence in the legal system.

He added that the ruling brings comfort to affected families. Moreover, it reinforces Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.

South-West Security Strategy and Amotekun Role

The governor confirmed that South-West leaders recently met in Ibadan.
They discussed strategies to improve regional security coordination.

He highlighted the role of the Amotekun Corps.
According to him, Amotekun remains central to local security operations.

He explained that Ondo, Oyo, Ekiti, and Ogun operate the outfit. Lagos State uses a different security structure.

Rising Security Concerns in the Region

Recent insecurity incidents have raised concerns across the South-West.
These include kidnappings in Oyo State and attacks in parts of Ekiti State.

Despite these challenges, Aiyedatiwa insisted that governors remain committed.
He said they continue to work together to improve safety across the region.

Conclusion

Governor Aiyedatiwa maintained that South-West states are not passive.
Instead, they actively coordinate security responses and intelligence sharing.

He concluded that ongoing collaboration will strengthen regional stability.
