Turkish Airlines Operations Disrupted by NUATE Protest at Lagos Airport

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Turkish Airlines’ operations were disrupted on Tuesday when aviation workers under the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) picketed the airline at Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The protest erupted over the alleged dismissal of seven union members, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded and forcing flight cancellations. Airport staff and travelers faced significant delays, while union members blocked access to operational areas.

NUATE Workers Stage Protest Over Dismissals

Union members accused Turkish Airlines of unfairly terminating seven of their colleagues. Early on Tuesday, they stormed the airport and picketed operational areas. The protest effectively halted airline services at Lagos Airport, creating confusion and forcing passengers to seek alternative travel arrangements.

Airline Responds: Safety and Compliance Remain Top Priority

Turkish Airlines acknowledged the workers’ concerns but described the picketing as regrettable. The airline emphasised that it operates in full compliance with Nigerian labour laws and regulatory frameworks.

“Turkish Airlines expects all stakeholders to pursue concerns through legal and dialogue channels rather than disruptive actions,” the company said.

The airline stressed that passenger, employee, and operational safety remains its highest priority. It warned that operational decisions are guided by safety standards, and necessary measures will be taken if safety is threatened.

Commitment to Dialogue Despite Disruptions

Turkish Airlines reassured the public of its willingness to continue engaging with the union and other stakeholders. The airline said it aims to reach a responsible and constructive resolution.

However, the company cautioned that prolonged disruptions could affect its flight schedule. “If the situation continues to disrupt operations or compromise safety, we may consider cancelling flights,” it added.

Passengers Face Flight Cancellations and Delays

The protest triggered tension at one of Nigeria’s busiest airports. Hundreds of travelers were left stranded as picketing blocked airline operations. Airport sources reported significant delays and confusion as passengers scrambled for alternative arrangements.

Turkish Airlines reiterated respect for workers’ rights but stressed that such actions undermine ongoing efforts to resolve the dispute.

Next Steps and Ongoing Negotiations

Discussions between Turkish Airlines and NUATE representatives are already underway. The airline emphasized that all operations in Nigeria follow strict compliance with labour laws and aviation regulations. Both parties aim to resolve the disagreement peacefully while restoring normal flight operations.
