Military repels ISWAP attack in Yobe
Meanwhile, troops of the Joint Task Force under Operation Hadin Kai repelled a coordinated attack by ISWAP fighters in Goniri, Yobe State.
The terrorists attacked military positions from the night of March 9 until the early hours of March 10, 2026.
The Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Sani Uba, disclosed the development in a statement.
According to him, surveillance teams detected the insurgents advancing from Goniri village and the Ngamdu Junction axis.
However, troops responded quickly with superior firepower and coordinated defensive manoeuvres.
Over 20 terrorists killed during firefight
The fierce battle forced the insurgents to retreat after suffering heavy losses.
Uba said troops killed more than 20 terrorists during the encounter.
Among those killed was a senior commander identified as Abu Yusu, described as the Munzir of Dursula.
Troops also recovered several weapons abandoned by the fleeing fighters.
Recovered items included machine guns, AK-47 rifles, improvised explosive devices, bombs and assorted ammunition.
Troops maintain control after operation
Security forces later conducted clearance operations in Gwaigomari within the Timbuktu Triangle.
During the patrol, soldiers discovered more bodies of terrorists in surrounding areas.
Uba said injured soldiers received medical treatment and remain in stable condition.
He added that troops still maintain full control of the location.
Military vows intensified operations
The Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, earlier said the military would restructure operations to tackle insurgent threats.
He noted that ground troops, supported by the air component, have launched aggressive follow-up operations.
These operations include search and clearance missions in nearby communities where wounded fighters may have fled.
According to the military, Operation Hadin Kai remains committed to defeating insurgency and restoring peace in Nigeria’s North-East.
