Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has endorsed Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election, during a meeting with political appointees and agency heads in Lafia on Thursday, citing unity, electoral strength, and the “Muje Maha” principle as key reasons for his decision.
Why Sule Chose Wadada
Governor Sule explained that the selection followed a thorough and inclusive process. He said the search lasted over a year and involved consultations with stakeholders across the state.
These stakeholders included youth groups, women organisations, traditional rulers, party leaders, and investors. According to him, the process focused on identifying a candidate with strong electoral appeal.
He noted that three aspirants emerged as capable contenders. However, after further engagement, Wadada stood out as the most suitable choice.
Call for Unity Among Party Members
The governor urged party members to support Wadada without resentment. He warned against ridiculing or undermining aspirants who were not selected.
He stressed that all three aspirants had the capacity to win. Therefore, unity remains critical for the party’s success in 2027.
Sule also reminded his appointees about the “Muje Maha” philosophy. He said it requires everyone to put aside personal interests and support the chosen candidate.
“Now is the time to demonstrate true commitment to Muje Maha through collective support,” he said.
Direct Primaries Adopted by Stakeholders
Isa Nathaniel, Chairman of the IGP Adamu Campaign Committee on Counter and Mobilization, reacted to the endorsement. He said the decision did not come as a surprise.
According to him, stakeholders had earlier met to discuss two options: consensus candidacy and direct primaries. Eventually, they agreed on direct primaries.
He added that the process remains open to all qualified party members. Any registered member can contest if they have something to offer the people.
Zoning and Power-Sharing Agreement
Governor Sule revealed that aspirants from Nasarawa West showed political maturity. They agreed to support whoever emerged as the preferred candidate.
He also disclosed that they demanded equitable distribution of elective positions. Specifically, they proposed balancing positions between the two federal constituencies.
Sule accepted the arrangement and pledged full support. He urged appointees to ensure smooth implementation.
Focus Beyond Governorship Race
The governor emphasized that unity should extend beyond the governorship race. He called for equal commitment to all elective positions.
These positions include the Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly. According to him, success in all areas will strengthen the party.
Confidence in 2027 Presidential Election
Sule expressed optimism about the 2027 presidential election. He said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would perform strongly in Nasarawa State.
He added that even critics of the administration have shown willingness to support Tinubu at the polls.
