ISWAP Claims Deadly Attacks on Nigerian Forces and Niger Republic in Propaganda Release

By Elizabeth Ugbo

The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has claimed responsibility for multiple attacks on Nigerian security forces and targets in the Niger Republic. The group released the claims on Thursday through a propaganda document shared on X (formerly Twitter). The report outlines alleged ambushes, explosions, and coordinated assaults across several locations. ISWAP says it carried out the attacks within one week to demonstrate operational strength and influence. However, security experts question the accuracy and intent behind these claims.

ISWAP Details Alleged Attacks on Military Patrols

According to the publication, ISWAP fighters used roadside explosives to target military patrols in northern Nigeria. The group claimed that one explosion killed seven soldiers, including a Major.

It also stated that the blast destroyed a military vehicle and injured several others. Furthermore, the group alleged that it attacked an army position near a town’s outskirts.

The report suggests that the attack aimed to lure troops into a planned ambush. However, authorities have not confirmed these claims.

Claims of Civilian Reprisals in Monguno

ISWAP accused Nigerian troops of burning civilian homes near Monguno. The group claimed that soldiers acted after residents failed to report insurgent movements.

It described the alleged response as desperate and unjustified. Meanwhile, independent sources have not verified these accusations.

Attacks Extend to Niger Republic

In addition, ISWAP claimed responsibility for an हमला in the Niger Republic. Fighters allegedly attacked a checkpoint at the entrance of Rifa city using machine guns.

The group said the assault killed and injured several افراد. It also claimed that fighters burned a vehicle and seized eight machine guns before retreating.

Report Highlights Multiple Operations in One Week

The propaganda document stated that ISWAP carried out at least 11 attacks within one week. It further claimed that these operations destroyed or damaged 42 vehicles.

Moreover, the report included references to attacks outside West Africa, including Syria. This suggests an attempt to project global reach.

Experts Warn Against Propaganda Narratives

Security analysts urge caution when assessing such claims. They note that insurgent groups often exaggerate successes to boost recruitment and spread fear.

A security source stressed that propaganda remains a key psychological warfare tool. Therefore, independent verification remains essential before drawing conclusions.

Conclusion

Although ISWAP continues to publicise its activities, many claims lack verification. Authorities and analysts advise skepticism while monitoring security developments closely.
