Students of the Department of International Relations at Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria received expert guidance on diplomacy during a virtual conference held under the course “African Union in International Affairs.” The session, coordinated by Musa Abdullahi Sufi, featured former Nigerian Ambassador to Singapore, Akinremi Bolaji, who advised participants on essential diplomatic skills. The event brought together university officials and over 50 students to discuss career pathways, global engagement, and modern diplomatic practices.

Key Skills for Modern Diplomacy

Ambassador Bolaji outlined the core skills required for success in diplomacy. He stressed effective communication, analytical thinking, and cultural adaptability. In addition, he highlighted digital literacy as a vital tool in today’s global system.

Furthermore, he urged students to stay informed about global history and current international affairs. This knowledge, he explained, strengthens relevance in a rapidly changing world.

Importance of Language Proficiency

Bolaji strongly encouraged students to learn foreign languages. He recommended French and Spanish alongside English. According to him, multilingual ability creates more opportunities in international assignments.

He added that language skills improve cross-cultural communication and negotiation outcomes.

ICT and Digital Diplomacy

The former envoy also emphasised the need for ICT competence. He noted that digital diplomacy continues to shape global interactions. Therefore, students must develop strong technological skills to remain competitive.

He also reminded participants that diplomacy is not limited to government officials. Citizens, he said, play a role in promoting Nigeria’s global image.

Interactive Learning Experience

The session featured active discussions and student engagement. Participants asked questions on bilateral negotiations, back-channel diplomacy, and current global issues.

Moreover, the conference formed part of an academic exercise. Students worked in groups and engaged diplomats for practical knowledge sharing.

Closing Remarks and Participation

Musa Abdullahi Sufi commended the guest speaker for an insightful presentation. He also praised students for their participation and cooperation.

In his closing remarks, Abdulkadir Inuwa Abdulkadir summarised key lecture points. He also highlighted various specialisations in international relations and diplomacy.

The conference attracted notable attendees, including:

  • President of the university, Mohammed Israr
  • Chair of International Relations Department, Nabila Mohammad Sani
  • Public Relations Officer, Hayatuddeen M. Abdallah

Conclusion

The virtual conference provided students with practical insights into diplomacy. It also reinforced the need for language mastery, ICT skills, and global awareness.
