MTN Nigeria paid N878.7bn in taxes, levies, and duties to federal and state authorities in 2025. The payment marked a 15 per cent increase from 2024. The company disclosed this in its 2025 Sustainability Report released on Thursday.
The report showed that MTN Nigeria increased its contributions as revenue rose to N5.20tn in 2025. Profit after tax also climbed to N1.11tn following recovery from forex-related losses.
Tax Contributions Rise Over Two Years
According to the report, MTN Nigeria paid N543.9bn in taxes and levies in 2023. The figure later increased to N764bn in 2024 before reaching N878.7bn in 2025.
The company said the payments covered company income tax, value-added tax, spectrum fees, import duties, and Nigerian Communications Commission levies. It also included contributions under the Rural and Urban Terrestrial Infrastructure tax credit scheme.
Furthermore, the company stated that its rising tax payments support Nigeria’s fiscal reform agenda and efforts to boost non-oil revenue.
MTN Expands Local Procurement Spending
The sustainability report highlighted MTN Nigeria’s growing support for local businesses. The company directed 62 per cent of its procurement spending to Nigerian suppliers in 2025. This represented an increase from 59.6 per cent recorded in 2024.
MTN explained that the policy aligns with the Federal Government’s local-content objectives. The spending supported sectors such as civil construction, logistics, software services, and power infrastructure.
Subscriber Base and Infrastructure Grow
The company expanded its operational footprint to 2,087 active base stations nationwide in 2025.
Active mobile subscribers stood at 85.4 million by the third quarter of 2025. In addition, active data users increased to 51.1 million. Smartphone penetration also reached 65.1 per cent.
Meanwhile, MTN Nigeria renewed its 800MHz spectrum licence for another 10 years. The renewal extends the licence validity until December 2034.
MTN Advances Rural Telecom Infrastructure
MTN Nigeria disclosed that the Rural and Urban Terrestrial Infrastructure scheme achieved 50 per cent completion in 2025.
The company secured approval for an additional N23bn tax credit. The funding will support fibre and telecommunications infrastructure expansion in underserved communities.
Additionally, MTN Nigeria participated in the Road Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme. Under the arrangement, the company committed N202.8bn toward reconstructing the 110-kilometre Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
Operating Profit Surges
The report showed that MTN Nigeria’s operating profit increased significantly in 2025.
Operating profit rose to N2.08tn from N778.2bn recorded in the previous year. The company linked the growth to stronger revenue performance and improved business recovery.
