The China-aided ECOWAS Headquarters Building was officially commissioned in Abuja on July 2, 2026. The event brought together West African leaders, senior Nigerian officials, diplomats and development partners. Sierra Leone’s President and Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Julius Maada Bio, led the ceremony alongside Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima, ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Touray, and Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Yu Dunhai. The project aims to strengthen regional integration, improve institutional capacity and deepen China-Africa cooperation.
Leaders Celebrate a Landmark Project
More than 400 guests attended the commissioning ceremony. They included representatives of ECOWAS member states, members of the diplomatic corps, executives of Chinese companies and journalists.
The new headquarters stands as one of the flagship projects delivered under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). It also reflects China’s continued support for regional institutions across Africa.
Ambassador Yu Highlights China-Africa Partnership
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Yu Dunhai described the headquarters as a symbol of the enduring friendship between China and Africa.
He said the project showcases successful South-South cooperation in a new era. Furthermore, he reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting ECOWAS in promoting peace, security and economic development across West Africa.
According to Ambassador Yu, China remains ready to deepen practical cooperation with African countries. He added that both sides will continue pursuing modernization through mutually beneficial partnerships.
ECOWAS Leaders Commend China’s Support
President Julius Maada Bio, Vice President Kashim Shettima and ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Touray praised the Chinese government for supporting the project.
They described the commissioning as a historic milestone for ECOWAS. They also said the headquarters would strengthen the institution’s capacity to drive regional integration, economic growth and shared prosperity.
In addition, the leaders noted that the facility will improve collaboration among member states and reinforce ECOWAS’ role in addressing regional challenges.

The completion of the China-aided ECOWAS Headquarters Building highlights the growing partnership between China and West Africa.
As ECOWAS expands its regional agenda, the modern facility will provide a stronger institutional base for cooperation, policy coordination and sustainable development across the sub-region.
