Tinubu Welcomes 4.43% GDP Growth, Assures Nigerians of Stronger Economic Performance

By Elizabeth Ugbo

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s 4.43% GDP growth in Q2 2026, reported by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday. The growth reflects stronger performance across agriculture, manufacturing, oil and gas, and services. Tinubu said his administration’s economic reforms are stabilising the economy and creating a stronger foundation for future prosperity.

Nigeria’s GDP Records Stronger Growth

According to the NBS report, Nigeria’s real GDP grew by 4.43% in the second quarter of 2026. The figure represents an improvement from the 4.23% growth recorded in Q2 2025.

Meanwhile, several key sectors recorded growth during the period. These include agriculture, manufacturing, oil and gas, and services.

The services sector continues to lead Nigeria’s economy in overall GDP contribution. Its performance therefore remains critical to the country’s broader economic outlook.

In nominal terms, Nigeria’s aggregate GDP reached ₦119.27 trillion in Q2 2026. This represents an 18.43% increase from the ₦100.7 trillion recorded during the same period in 2025.

Tinubu Defends Economic Reforms

President Tinubu said the latest GDP figures arrived at an important time for his administration.

He argued that the figures show the impact of reforms introduced since May 2023. According to him, the government took difficult decisions to stabilise the economy and strengthen its foundation.

“The results of the efforts are becoming very clear to all: The Renewed Hope Agenda is working.”

Tinubu also dismissed criticism from opposition groups over his administration’s economic policies. He said the government introduced reforms to create long-term prosperity rather than immediate comfort.

President Highlights Economic Gains

The President pointed to several developments that he said demonstrate Nigeria’s improving economic position.

He noted that Nigeria now records trade surpluses. He also said foreign reserves have reached their highest level in 17 years.

Additionally, Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s improved credit rating. He also pointed to increased infrastructure development across the country.

According to him, road and railway projects are progressing nationwide. He added that investors who previously left Nigeria are beginning to return.

The President further cited increased oil and gas production as another sign of improving economic activity.

Tinubu Highlights Education and Credit Initiatives

Tinubu also highlighted developments in Nigeria’s education sector.

He said Nigerian universities have experienced a period without strikes. Consequently, he noted that students can remain in classrooms without prolonged disruptions.

The President also referenced the NELFUND student loan programme. He said the initiative is helping more Nigerian students access higher education.

Similarly, Tinubu mentioned affordable credit provided to civil servants through CreditCorp. He said such initiatives can expand access to financing for citizens.

Government Plans Relief for Vulnerable Nigerians

Despite the positive GDP figures, Tinubu acknowledged that many Nigerians still face economic difficulties.

He said the Federal Government will address some challenges affecting vulnerable citizens. These measures will focus on transportation, food production and grassroots relief programmes.

According to the President, the government plans to provide cheaper transportation options. It also intends to increase food production across the country.

Furthermore, he said various relief programmes will target communities at the grassroots.

Tinubu Promises Stronger Microeconomic Outcomes

President Tinubu said the government will not relax its efforts despite the latest economic gains.

He stressed the need to maintain sustainable economic progress. He also promised to translate stronger macroeconomic performance into tangible benefits for households.

“We are fully committed to translating consistent, stronger economic performance into better microeconomic outcomes for our citizens.”

Tinubu said Nigerians should eventually feel the impact of economic growth in their homes and pockets.

He therefore urged continued vigilance to protect the progress achieved so far. The President maintained that his administration remains committed to building a stronger and more prosperous Nigerian economy.
