Nigerian dancer Benjamin Daniel, popularly known as Ben Dancer, completed a 168-hour dance marathon in Lagos on Tuesday. The 33-year-old began the challenge at Freedom Park last week to break the existing 127-hour record. He aimed to showcase Nigeria’s cultural diversity through dance, music and traditional outfits.

Daniel Completes Seven-Day Dance Challenge

Daniel reached the seven-day mark at about 3am on Tuesday. However, he continued dancing for another nine hours.

According to his team, he eventually ended the challenge at midday. Supporters gathered at Freedom Park throughout the performance.

Daniel has worked as a professional dancer for 18 years. During the marathon, he performed various Nigerian dance styles.

He also featured several musical genres throughout the challenge. These included Afrobeats, fuji, jazz and zouk.

Dancer Showcases Nigerian Culture

Daniel’s team said the performance aimed to celebrate Nigeria’s cultural diversity. The country has more than 250 ethnic groups and many traditional dance forms.

Daniel also wore traditional Nigerian outfits during the performance. His outfits included agbada and dashiki.

The marathon attracted crowds who watched and encouraged him throughout the seven-day challenge.

Daniel Prepared for Physically Demanding Challenge

Daniel underwent fitness training before starting the marathon. He also adjusted his diet to support the demanding performance.

During the challenge, he received five minutes of rest for every continuous hour. He also ate lightly and maintained his hydration.

Medical personnel remained available throughout the attempt. After completing the marathon, Daniel went to hospital for a medical check-up.

Guinness World Records Reviews Application

The current Guinness World Records title stands at 127 hours. Indian dancer Srushti Sudhir Jagtap set the record in 2023.

Guinness World Records has confirmed receiving Daniel’s application. However, the organisation has not officially confirmed a new record.

A Guinness World Records spokesperson told the BBC that Daniel’s application remains active. The organisation now awaits his evidence for review and verification.

The spokesperson said Guinness must complete its official process before confirming any record.

Therefore, Daniel’s 168-hour performance remains subject to Guinness World Records’ verification.
