Air Chief Condemns Alleged Coup Plot, Reaffirms Loyalty to Democracy

By Elizabeth Ugbo

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, on Wednesday in Abuja condemned alleged plans by certain individuals to violently subvert Nigeria’s democracy, warning that perpetrators would face the full wrath of the law. He spoke during a meeting with Branch Chiefs and Commanders to mark his first 100 days in office.Aneke described the reported plot as shameful and reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s loyalty to the Constitution and the democratically elected government, urging commanders to maintain discipline and unity within the ranks. He linked Nigeria’s security challenges to instability in the Sahel, noting that coups in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger had weakened regional cooperation and emboldened jihadist groups, with violence threatening to spread to coastal states, including Nigeria.Domestically, he acknowledged modest security gains but said insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and farmer-herder conflicts persist, raising concern over ISWAP’s reported expansion into Kwara State. With elections approaching, Aneke urged personnel to remain professional and politically neutral, pledging that the Air Force would stay mission-ready to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
