A Federal High Court in Kaduna on Tuesday granted bail to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai in an ongoing corruption case filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The court delivered the ruling after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defence in Kaduna on April 14, 2026. The judge approved bail terms while the defendant remains in custody until he meets all conditions set by the court.
Court Grants Bail in Kaduna Corruption Case
Justice Rilwanu Aikawa ruled that El-Rufai qualifies for bail under strict conditions. However, the court ordered that he remain in ICPC custody until compliance. The ruling followed an amended nine-count charge filed by the ICPC.
The judge also directed the defendant to attend all court sittings. In addition, the court restricted public commentary on the case.
ICPC Details Multiple Allegations Against El-Rufai
The ICPC accused El-Rufai of conspiracy to influence federal investigators through monetary inducement. The agency also linked him to alleged procurement breaches.
Key allegations include:
- Award of a N4.6 billion CCTV contract in Kaduna
- Abuse of office in land revocation and reallocation
- Criminal breach of trust involving state property
- Mismanagement of a World Bank loan worth $1.08 million
- Alleged unlawful severance payments of about N289.8 million
- Release of about N11 billion to an unregistered entity
The ICPC also alleged that he conferred undue advantage on associates during his tenure.
The former governor has denied all charges.
Bail Conditions and Custody Status
The court fixed bail at N200 million with strict conditions. These include provision of a surety with landed property and a traditional title.
An associate confirmed that the court imposed about ten bail conditions. He added that El-Rufai remains in custody until full compliance.
Legal practitioner El Zubair Abubakar explained that another pending case may delay release. He noted that bail in one court does not guarantee immediate freedom.
Bello El-Rufai Reacts to Bail Ruling
Bello El-Rufai welcomed the bail decision. He urged the public to respect due process.
He praised the legal team and supporters. He also stressed that court facts differ from media opinions.
He added that the defence will rely on legal counsel for further arguments. He expressed confidence in the judiciary and rule of law.
EFCC and ICPC Case Background
The ICPC filed amended charges after initial investigations. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had earlier handled related proceedings before releasing El-Rufai on compassionate grounds for a family burial.
The ICPC later resumed prosecution with revised allegations and additional counts.
Next Court Proceedings
A separate case remains before the Kaduna State High Court. The court adjourned ruling on a bail application to April 21, 2026.
Legal observers say both cases must be resolved before full release becomes possible.
Conclusion
The bail ruling marks a major step in the high-profile corruption trial. However, strict conditions and parallel proceedings mean El-Rufai remains under legal restraint.
Authorities continue hearings as the case progresses in Kaduna courts.
