The African Democratic Congress concluded its national convention on Tuesday in Abuja, where delegates overwhelmingly amended the party constitution at the Rainbow Event Centre. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) held the event to strengthen internal structure and prepare for the 2027 elections, as 1,576 delegates participated, while 1,471 voted “yes,” representing 94 percent support, according to the electoral sub-committee led by Emeka Ihedioha, marking a decisive moment in party reforms.
Strong Delegates’ Turnout and Constitutional Amendment
The convention recorded strong participation from accredited delegates.
Out of 1,576 accredited members, 11 votes were voided.
Emeka Ihedioha confirmed the results after the voting process.
He declared that the amendment reflected the will of the delegates.
Consequently, the party constitution now stands officially amended.
NEC Decisions Reshape ADC Leadership Structure
Earlier, the Legal and Convention Processes Committee led resolutions at the 97th, 98th, and 99th NEC meetings.
The 99th NEC dissolved the Chief Ralph Nwosu-led National Working Committee.
It also approved a new leadership structure under David Mark.
The convention later ratified these decisions without opposition.
David Mark described the convention as highly organized and historic.
He said the party had begun its journey toward Aso Rock in 2027.
Atiku Abubakar Raises Concerns Over INEC
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission.
He accused Independent National Electoral Commission of undermining democracy.
Atiku also questioned the conduct of its leadership.
He warned that opposition forces would resist alleged electoral interference.
Peter Obi Warns on Rising National Debt
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi criticized Nigeria’s rising debt profile.
He said subsidy removal aimed to reduce borrowing and improve development.
However, he argued that government borrowing increased sharply afterward.
He warned that Nigeria faces serious economic risks if trends continue.
Amaechi Compares Security Situation to Civil War
Former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi expressed concern over insecurity.
He described recent incidents as resembling a civil war situation.
Amaechi said strong leadership remains necessary to curb crime.
He added that his administration prioritized swift arrests and security response.
Aregbesola Criticizes Government’s “Renewed Hope” Agenda
Former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola described the Renewed Hope agenda as a failure.
He urged the government to resign over worsening insecurity and hardship.
He argued that promises have not translated into real progress.
He further accused the administration of misleading Nigerians.
Leadership Transition and Party Direction
The convention confirmed new leadership arrangements within the ADC.
David Mark now leads the party structure after NEC approval.
Party leaders believe the changes will strengthen electoral competitiveness.
They also aim to reposition the party for 2027 general elections.
