Favour Ofili’s Turkey Transfer Rejected by World Athletics Over Eligibility Concerns

Favour Ofili’s Turkey Transfer Rejected by World Athletics Over Eligibility Concerns

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Favour Ofili, a 23-year-old Nigerian sprinter, faced a major setback on Thursday when World Athletics’ Nationality Review Panel rejected her transfer request to represent Turkey. The decision came after a 2025 application process initiated by the Turkish Athletics Federation. The panel ruled she lacked sufficient personal and residency ties to Turkey. It also cited concerns over a government-linked recruitment strategy and athlete eligibility rules. Ofili had sought the switch due to disputes with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and personal safety concerns, but she will remain ineligible to compete for Turkey in international events, including the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

World Athletics Blocks Allegiance Switch

World Athletics confirmed the rejection after a detailed eligibility review. The governing body concluded that Ofili did not meet transfer requirements. It also found no strong evidence of long-term integration in Turkey.

The panel stressed that nationality changes must reflect genuine sporting and residential links. It warned that improper transfers could weaken global athletics integrity.

Background to Ofili’s Nationality Move

Ofili began her transfer process in 2025 after raising concerns about her treatment in Nigeria. She accused officials of poor support at major championships. She also questioned her safety and career development.

Turkey granted her citizenship during the same period. The move formed part of a wider effort to attract elite athletes through incentives.

Panel Flags Recruitment Strategy Concerns

The Review Panel linked Ofili’s case to a broader recruitment drive. It said Turkey targeted overseas athletes with financial incentives and club contracts.

Officials argued this approach risked undermining national sports development systems. They also warned it could reduce opportunities for homegrown athletes.

Despite rejection, Ofili may still compete at club level in Turkey. However, she cannot represent the country internationally.

Nigeria Welcomes Possible Return

Nigeria’s National Sports Commission responded positively to the ruling. Director General Bukola Olopade said the country remains open to welcoming Ofili back.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria also confirmed her continued eligibility for Nigeria. This strengthens Nigeria’s sprint lineup ahead of future competitions.

Financial and Career Implications

The rejected transfer also ends a major financial opportunity for Ofili. Reports linked her proposed Turkish deal to monthly earnings of about $10,000.

The agreement also included a long-term extension plan through 2032. These benefits now no longer apply following the ruling.

World Athletics Emphasises Athlete Protection

World Athletics also addressed welfare concerns raised by Ofili. It acknowledged her claims regarding disputes and personal safety.

The organisation said it would monitor her situation through safeguarding systems. It stressed that athlete protection remains a key priority.

Ofili’s Athletic Profile

Ofili remains one of Nigeria’s top sprinters. She holds the national 200 metres record at 21.96 seconds.

She also recorded a personal best of 10.78 seconds in the 100 metres. These achievements confirm her status as a leading figure in Nigerian athletics.
