DOHA, Qatar – Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the State of Qatar, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, on Thursday, July 2, 2026, presented his Letters of Credence to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Amir of Qatar, at the Amiri Diwan in Doha. The ceremony officially marked the commencement of his diplomatic mission in Qatar. It also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations through enhanced cooperation in trade, investment, education, security and humanitarian affairs.
Ceremony Marked by Full Diplomatic Honours
Ambassador Yakubu arrived at the Amiri Diwan accompanied by senior officials of the Nigerian Embassy. He received full diplomatic honours, including an inspection of the Guard of Honour, reflecting the cordial relations between Nigeria and Qatar.
Private Meeting Focuses on Bilateral Cooperation
Following the ceremony, Ambassador Yakubu held a private audience with the Amir of Qatar.
During the meeting, the Amir warmly welcomed the Nigerian envoy. He recalled previous high-level engagements between both countries and reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Nigeria across strategic sectors.
In response, Ambassador Yakubu conveyed the warm greetings and best wishes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to the Amir and the people of Qatar. He also reiterated Nigeria’s determination to deepen its longstanding friendship and mutually beneficial partnership with Qatar.
Ambassador Offers Condolences Over Ras Laffan Incident
The ambassador also expressed condolences to the Amir over the recent accident at Ras Laffan Industrial City.
Furthermore, he stressed the importance of expanding collaboration in trade, investment, education, security and humanitarian affairs. He noted that stronger cooperation would deliver greater economic opportunities and shared prosperity for both nations.
Nigeria and Qatar Seek Stronger Diplomatic Ties
The presentation of the Letters of Credence marks a significant step in advancing Nigeria-Qatar diplomatic relations. Both countries reaffirmed their shared commitment to closer engagement and broader cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
