Former Kano State governor Ibrahim Shekarau has returned to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State after weeks of consultations, following a personal appeal by APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, who visited him to seek support and strengthen alliances ahead of the 2027 elections in the North.
Yilwatda’s Emotional Appeal for Unity
Yilwatda made a direct and emotional plea during his visit. He asked Shekarau for mentorship and political support.
“I am your son. I need your support,” he said.
He also urged northern leaders to unite under the APC. According to him, unity will strengthen political influence in the region.
Shekarau Responds with Caution
Shekarau welcomed the visit and described it as a sign of respect. However, he avoided making an immediate commitment.
“In a few days, you will hear from us,” he said.
He stressed that any decision would prioritize the interests of Kano State.
PDP Crisis Shapes Political Decisions
Shekarau pointed to internal challenges within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He described the situation as serious and unresolved.
As a result, his camp began exploring alternatives. This shift opened the door for renewed engagement with the APC.
A Lifetime Commitment to Politics
During his 70th birthday, Shekarau reaffirmed his dedication to public service. He described politics as a lifelong responsibility.
“My politics is my religion,” he said.
He emphasized justice, accountability, and service to humanity as guiding principles.
Strong Legacy and Grassroots Influence
Shekarau governed Kano from 2003 to 2011. During that period, he built strong grassroots support.
His policies supported civil servants, traders, and youths. Programmes like kudin gero and jari kyauta created lasting goodwill.
He also maintained strong relationships across political and social groups. This broad appeal continues to shape his influence.
Political Realignments Intensify in Kano
Recent defections have reshaped Kano politics. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf moved to the APC. Meanwhile, Rabiu Kwankwaso joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In addition, Nasir Gawuna also defected to the ADC. These moves increased competition ahead of 2027.
Strategic Efforts Behind the Scenes
Before the defection, key meetings took place in Abuja. Governor Yusuf led efforts to persuade Shekarau.
Observers believe the strategy involved support from Bola Ahmed Tinubu. These coordinated efforts strengthened APC’s position.
Implications for 2027 Elections
Shekarau’s return gives the APC a major advantage in Kano. His influence could reshape voter alignment.
On the other hand, the ADC and PDP face a significant setback. This development changes the political balance in the state.
Conclusion: A Defining Political Shift
Shekarau’s return reflects more than party loyalty. It highlights strategy, influence, and political legacy.
As the 2027 elections approach, Kano remains a key battleground. This move could shape the outcome significantly.
