On Thursday in Lafia, Nasarawa State, Nigeria, former Deputy Governor Silas Agara declared his intention to contest the Nasarawa North Senatorial seat under the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 political cycle. He made the declaration during a meeting with the APC State Working Committee. Agara, who recently resigned as Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment, said he entered the race after wide consultations. He stated that growing calls from his constituents pushed him to act. He also emphasized his mission to contribute to the development of Nasarawa State through democratic participation.
Agara Explains Reason for Resignation and Return to Politics
Agara said he stepped down from his federal appointment to answer a “clarion call” from his people. He explained that his decision reflects commitment to grassroots service. According to him, leadership must align with the needs of the people.
He also stressed that internal democracy must guide the party’s processes. Therefore, he urged the APC to ensure transparency throughout the primaries.
Commitment to Fair and Rule-Based Contest
Agara called on party leaders to guarantee fairness in the upcoming primaries. He insisted that all aspirants must compete under equal conditions.
He added that party members must follow established rules. Furthermore, he pledged to respect every guideline set by the APC.
“For me, I am not competing with anyone for a stage. The stage is large enough for all of us,” he said.
He described his political return as a mission to contribute meaningfully to state development.
APC Promises Level Playing Field
The APC Chairman in Nasarawa State, Dr. Aliyu Bello, praised Agara’s decision. He noted that leaving a federal position for grassroots politics requires courage and vision.
Bello assured all aspirants of a fair contest. He emphasized that the party will strictly enforce its rules.
“We will ensure a level playing field for every aspirant,” he said. He added that the party remains committed to credible and transparent primaries.
Growing Political Competition in Nasarawa North
Agara’s entry adds more weight to the Nasarawa North senatorial race. Reports also indicate interest from other high-profile figures, including Governor Abdullahi Sule, who may contest after his tenure ends.
This development signals an intense political buildup within the APC ahead of the primaries. It also highlights increasing interest in the senatorial seat.
