President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Ogun State. The approval came on Monday to expand training capacity. The project will receive ₦15 billion funding. The fund will come from TETFund’s 2026 allocation. The move targets improved policing education and national security.
Key Appointments Across Geopolitical Zones
The President also appointed six representatives for Nigeria’s geopolitical zones. They include:
- Babagana Zannah Adam (North East)
- Emmanuel Torkuma Manger (North Central)
- Maigari Abati Dikko (North West)
- Dubem A. Obaze (South East)
- Ajibogere Toyin (South West)
- Udom Udo Ekpoudom (South South)
Meanwhile, the Academy Commandant, Provost, and DIG in charge of training will serve as ex officio members. The Registrar will act as secretary.
Governing Council Reconstituted
In addition, Tinubu reconstituted the Academy’s governing council. He appointed Ibrahim Gaidam as chairman of the 16-member body.
Other members include:
- Chairman of the Police Service Commission
- Inspector-General of Police
- Representatives from key ministries
These ministries include Education, Finance, and Justice.
₦15 Billion Fund to Boost Infrastructure
The ₦15 billion intervention will fund critical infrastructure. It will also support academic facilities and student accommodation. Furthermore, it will provide modern training assets.
The funding will come from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). This ensures sustainable development for the new campus.
Why Erinja Was Selected
Authorities chose Erinja after a high-level meeting with stakeholders. Participants included:
- Minister of Police Affairs
- Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa
- Inspector-General of Police
- National Universities Commission officials
They assessed student capacity, funding, and academic standards. They also reviewed long-term manpower needs of the police.
Expansion Backed by Law
The new campus follows the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021. The law allows expansion beyond Wudil, Kano State.
This step supports increased recruitment in the Nigeria Police Force.
Strengthening Security Through Education
Tinubu expressed confidence in the project. He said the expansion will improve governance and training quality. It will also enhance modern policing education.
Ultimately, the initiative aims to strengthen national security through better-trained officers.
