On Thursday in Abuja, Atiku Abubakar visited Rotimi Amaechi at his residence after the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary. The visit followed the announcement of Atiku as winner of the ADC primary. He defeated Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in the contest. Atiku said the meeting focused on national challenges, including insecurity and economic hardship. He also stressed the need for patriotic collaboration to rescue Nigeria.
ADC Presidential Primary Outcome
The ADC announced Atiku as its presidential flagbearer on Wednesday. The party said he polled 1,846,370 votes.
Amaechi came second with 504,117 votes. Mohammed Hayatu-Deen scored 177,120 votes.
The party leadership insisted the process remained open and competitive. However, the outcome triggered internal disagreements among key contestants.
Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen Reject Results
Amaechi rejected the primary outcome. He alleged irregularities and vote disenfranchisement during the exercise.
Similarly, Hayatu-Deen declined to attend the official announcement of results. He also raised concerns about vote credibility.
Despite these objections, the party maintained that delegates freely chose their preferred candidate.
David Mark Defends ADC Process
The National Chairman of the ADC, David Mark, defended the primary. He stated that the party allowed a fair contest.
He also said members had the freedom to make their choices.
However, he admitted that the exercise still had room for improvement.
Atiku’s Visit and Political Banter with Amaechi
During the visit, Atiku described the meeting as a frank discussion on Nigeria’s situation. He highlighted economic pressure, insecurity, and governance concerns.
He also shared a light moment with Amaechi, referencing Arsenal’s football success. Amaechi responded in good spirit during the exchange.
Atiku added that hospitality and goodwill shaped the interaction.
The visit came shortly after a heated primary season within the ADC.
