The Nigerian Navy has launched Exercise Obangame Express 2026 in Onne, Rivers State, deploying ships, helicopters, and personnel to combat maritime crimes across the Gulf of Guinea. The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, announced the operation on Sunday, highlighting its focus on piracy, oil theft, and illegal trafficking through coordinated multinational efforts.
Strengthening Maritime Security in the Gulf of Guinea
Vice Admiral Abbas said the exercise plays a key role in improving regional security. He explained that it enhances cooperation among navies and strengthens diplomatic ties.
Moreover, the initiative supports a unified response to maritime threats. It also reinforces the collective security framework across West and Central Africa.
Deployment of Naval Assets and Strategic Operations
The Nigerian Navy has deployed 10 ships, two helicopters, and maritime surveillance assets. In addition, Special Boat Service personnel will participate in the drills.
These assets will handle several operations, including:
- Anti-arms and drug trafficking missions
- Anti-crude oil theft operations
- Combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing
- Visit, board, search, and seizure procedures
- Search and rescue missions
- Simulation of hot pursuit scenarios
According to Abbas, these activities will sharpen operational skills and improve readiness. They will also strengthen coordinated responses to real-world threats.
Enhancing Readiness Through Collaboration
Abbas emphasized that the exercise reflects strong planning and logistics. He noted that sustained collaboration among participating nations remains vital.
He added that continued partnership will ensure a safer and more stable maritime environment. This, in turn, will support economic growth in the region.
Role of International Partnership
Earlier, Rear Admiral C.D. Okehie, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Naval Command, described the exercise as a major multinational operation.
He explained that the United States Africa Command sponsors the exercise. Since its launch in 2010 by the United States Navy, it has grown significantly.
Furthermore, Okehie highlighted the Gulf of Guinea’s importance as a global shipping route. However, he warned that the region still faces evolving threats like piracy and sea robbery.
Building Capacity and Regional Cooperation
Okehie stressed that the exercise improves the capacity of participating navies. It also strengthens their ability to tackle both local and transnational crimes.
He noted that the operation promotes:
- Information sharing
- Maritime domain awareness
- Tactical and operational readiness
As a result, participating countries can respond more effectively to security challenges.
Government Support and Naval Commitment
Abbas thanked President Bola Tinubu for supporting the Armed Forces. He also praised naval personnel for their professionalism and dedication.
He reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to securing Nigeria’s maritime domain. He added that unity and cooperation remain essential for long-term success.
