Manchester United defeated Chelsea 1-0 on Saturday at Stamford Bridge, London, as Matheus Cunha scored just before halftime from Bruno Fernandes’ assist to strengthen United’s push for UEFA Champions League qualification.
Cunha Strike Separates Both Sides
Manchester United took the lead two minutes before the break. Cunha applied a precise finish after a well-timed pass from Fernandes.
Earlier, Fernandes almost opened the scoring. He curled a shot narrowly wide, signaling United’s attacking intent.
Chelsea Respond but Lack Cutting Edge
Chelsea improved after halftime. However, they failed to convert their chances.
Liam Delap struck the woodwork with a strong header. Meanwhile, Noussair Mazraoui nearly turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Wesley Fofana.
Later, Moises Caicedo came close to equalising. Still, United’s defense remained solid.
Carrick’s Tactical Gamble Pays Off
United entered the match after a 2-1 loss to Leeds United. Despite that setback, they responded strongly.
Manager Michael Carrick deployed a makeshift defense. The lineup included three full-backs and youngster Ayden Heaven.
As a result, the team showed discipline and composure throughout the game.
Pressure Mounts on Chelsea Boss
Chelsea’s fourth consecutive league defeat increased pressure on manager Liam Rosenior.
The Blues missed injured top scorer Joao Pedro. Delap failed to deliver in his absence.
In addition, Enzo Fernandez returned from suspension but could not change the outcome.
Champions League Race Takes Shape
United’s victory opened a 10-point gap over sixth-placed Chelsea. Only 15 points remain this season.
Importantly, the Premier League’s top five teams will qualify for the Champions League. Therefore, United now hold a strong advantage.
Chelsea, however, risk settling for Europa League football next season.
